What is Ransomware

Ransomware is a malware that attackers use to steal and encrypt victims’ files which would then be taken “hostage” by them, “liberated” only if a ransom is paid. The hackers promise the targets to decrypt or return the stolen files if they are paid; however, recovering the files cannot be guaranteed. The attackers usually succeed in stealing the files through phishing plots. Phishing typically involves the hackers posing as trustable entities asking users for sensitive data or to make payments. The request might be done via an email including a clickable link that redirects the user to a fake website where he/she is asked to enter his/her information. It can also be done through attaching malicious files to the sent email.
