An initial public offering is the event when a company first lists its stock publicly, making it available to be traded on the stock market. It is a mechanism to gather funds from investors and a signal of the company’s quality and growth prospects.

 

For a company to be listed, it first must pass a thorough inspection from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
